The ever changing hallway
25 May, 2012. 1 Comment. A Day In First Grade, First Grade, Uncategorized. Posted By: Kristen Smith

I love putting up hallway displays. Since I work at a private school, tours come through fairly frequently and it is nice to have student work in the halls for the parents to see.

As you know, we were studying clouds a few weeks back and I never got around to putting up all the pictures of the things we were doing in my class.

Since we were studying the differences between types of clouds, we created adjective clouds. We brainstormed adjectives that would go specifically with each type of cloud. Then we created each cloud using different craft supplies.

For our Cirrus clouds we painted them with thin, wispy white paint:

For our Cumulus clouds we mixed shaving cream and Elmers glue in cupcake wrappers and then created fluffy clouds on our dark blue construction  paper.

For our Stratus clouds, we made layers of gray, white (and some girls wanted to create pink sunsets) with tissue paper.
We also wrote cloud similes. Here are some close ups:
On the other side of my door is our Synonym garden! I saw this idea on pinterest as well ((my new best friend)) and tweaked it a little bit. I bought the fatter paint chips and cut them into petals to make daisy-esque flowers!

  1. Fantastic ideas! Love the hands on art activities for cloud study and it’s always good to find another use for paint chips. Just came across your blog via pinterest – will be following along! (I’m a fellow teacher and blogger) :)
