“Teacher Cards” — getting away from the prize box
22 Jun, 2012. 8 Comments. Back to School, Free. Posted By: Kristen Smith
I don’t know about you… but I’m so over the whole prize box thing. I am so tired of collecting prizes that kids don’t really want, need, or care about. I’m sick of perpetuating the ‘give me more’ mentality…
Living in the Dominican Republic for a year and teaching the poorest of the poor really changes a person. For that reason, I have to get rid of the prize box in my classroom. I am in no way judging anyone who uses them!! I used to– but this year I am trying something different.
This year I have created a deck of teacher cards. πŸ˜‰ On these cards are written a variety of rewards that students can enjoy in the classroom. They range from being the DJ for the day (and choosing what we listen to when we are working) to taking off their shoes!
The next freebie includes a deck of teacher cards and a description of what the reward entails!!
I am going to use mine when my kids clip all the way to the top of our behavior ladder. I probably will also use them for other incentives as well.
The best thing about them is they are FREE rewards! AND they aren’t just some toy that the kids are going to throw into the bottom of their toy chest to be taken out for a future garage sale. πŸ˜‰
Get the whole set HERE!!
And just because… here are some photos from the DR.

Meet Carlos Miguel :) He is my best friend in the DR’s son. He is the love of my life. I miss him so much.

This is a typical walk around one of the villages where I served. It’s called Pancho Mateo and if I could click my heels three times and go anywhere I would want to end up right where this picture was taken.

This is right outside of the school I worked at.

Have a great day! :)

  3. Those pictures are priceless. So heart warming. I love, love, love the deck of cards reward system! You are so right on feeding the “give me more” mentality. I may have to retire the good ‘ol “Lucket Bucket” this year and use these cards! Our bucket fairy can never keep it full of prizes quick enough πŸ˜‰

  4. I love your pix and I agree with you about the prize boxes. We live in such an accumulative, wasteful society!
Take care .. Thanks for being real :)

I love your reward cards! How do I download them using Script? I thought it was free, but it says I need to buy a monthly subscription. Can you help me?! Thanks! :)
