Can’t Live Without It!!
7 Jun, 2012. 5 Comments. Uncategorized. Posted By: Kristen Smith

Kelley over at the teacher idea factory is hosting a linky party of things that  you cannot live without in your classroom. These are the items that I can’t live without in my classroom:

1. Mr. Sketch Smelly Markers — I don’t know who likes these more, me or my students. They love it when I let them pick the scent that I use on their paper!!

2. I teach at a Christian School and I have to say I have tried numerous children’s Bibles. This year my church suggested reading from The Jesus Storybook Bible and I must say, I agree 100%. The stories are written in a way that the kids hold on to every last word. If you teach in a Christian school I suggest looking into this Bible!  (Or if you are a parent and are looking for a Bible for your kids, this is a great one!!)
3. Post It Notes! I use these for what seems like EVERYTHING. From Daily 5 selection choices, Retelling stories, Think Maps, Math Bins to Guided Reading, you can generally find me with or using Post It notes!
Here is a graph that we used to see how our Stamina was during our Daily 5 sessions. (I used mini- post it notes instead of having to color it in every time!)
Another activity where I use Post It notes was for retelling the beginning, middle and end of the story. For this I took a large File Folder and traced 8 post it notes in different colors: Blue squares are the retelling part, Yellow squares are the characters, Purple is the problem and Green is the setting.
When students finished a chapter in their book, they responded on post it notes and put them in the correct places. They really enjoyed this activity and it helped them with comprehension!
I also use Post It notes for games!
and so much more!
4. Tins from the dollar spot at Target!
5. Cups/Small Bins — I learned when I taught kindergarten that if you give every student their own container of whatever you are using, your life will be MUCH easier for you. Now whenever we are using any manipulative, supply or item I pass them out to students in individual cups or bins. They do not have to be fancy the trick is that every student has their own supply! I promise this cuts the arguments and whining if not to zero to a minimum!!
{I have used the tins above, plastic cups, themed cups, tupperware, or bins from the Target dollar spot!}
I don’t know if these all qualify as “resources” but I certainly can’t live without them!!
