Mix and Mingle

One of my favorite ways to review a concept we have learned is called “Mix and Mingle.” In this review, each student has a clip board and the worksheet that either I have created or found to use.
In this video we were reviewing fractions and the review page had 20 different circles where the kids had to write down the actual number fraction underneath the circle.
In Mix and Mingle, each student has to get their whole page filled with correct answers without writing on their paper. Instead, they “mingle” when the music is on, and when the music stops, they stop and find a friend. (Please excuse the southern twang that my voice takes on in this video… I honestly have no idea where it came from as I’m from Boston. {yet teach in Austin, TX})
When they find a friend they ask them to answer one of their problems, and they in turn, answer one of their friend’s problems. If the friend does not know how to answer the problem, they need to coach them through the problem. It’s great to see peers working together and helping one another.
They cannot go right back to the same friend. They have to find a new friend during the next answer session.  (Which is nice because it builds an awesome class dynamic of everyone mingling together.)
The other great thing about Mix and Mingle is the students get a brain break in between each problem.
My class this year LOVED dancing.
One of these days, I’ll have to post a video of us straight up “freeze dancing.” ((That has to be my favorite brain break EVER.))
