One of the ways that I organize the Daily 5 in my class is by using a pocket chart.
In my class all of my students have a number. (You can see from the picture that last year I used old calendar numbers!) Before each session of the Daily 5 I have all my students close their eyes and I ask them to think, ‘what does my body feel like doing right now? Do I feel like reading to myself? Do I feel like writing? Or do I feel like word work?’ Once they know what they want to do I have them open their eyes and raise their hands. I call on them one by one and they get up and move their number card and get started on what they selected.
This helps me know what all of my students are doing and it also guarantees that they cannot pick the same thing on any given day.
This year instead of old calendar numbers and hand written cards I made Daily 5 cards!! Better yet, they are free for YOU!!
