Yesterday I heard this expression A LOT. “Miss Smith, this is the BEST. DAY. EVER!!!” 🙂
We have finished our second week of school and are almost into a routine. My class is awesome. If I haven’t told you that, I thought you should know. They are eager learners, they have HUGE hearts, and are loving all of the activities that we have been doing.
This last week our theme was the weather.
We used weather in our writing, math and language lessons all week long! We started off by reading many non fiction books and discussing what we knew about weather. We worked together to come up with a “think bubble” about weather.
Then we used this to complete brain maps about weather.
Then from there, we journaled about weather!
My class really enjoyed learning about tornadoes and hurricanes. Taking their lead, our science experiment for the week was a tornado in a bottle!
Now, a few lessons I learned while doing this experiment with my kids. First of all, use long, skinny containers. They work so much better. Measure out the dish soap and vinegar precisely!! Don’t use too much food coloring (because then you can’t see the tornado) and totally use glitter.
To complete this experiment, we decked out in our science lab coats again, and got all of our supplies ready.
Each group was given a few containers. One with glitter, one with 1 teaspoon of dish soap, and one with a teaspoon of vinegar. Then the team members went back and forth adding their ingredients.
After everything was added, they stirred their containers with plastic knives and watched with eager anticipation to see their tornadoes form!!
It’s so fun to see kids so excited to learn.
We also had a lot of fun using tornadoes for some edible math estimations as well! Each child was given an estimation page and some chocolate chip cookie goldfish and estimated how many goldfish it would take to cover their tornadoes!
This week I introduced word work and have completed numerous literacy centers with my kids. I also completed my DRAs which is a HUGE accomplishment. Next week I’ll have mini conferences with all my parents to help them understand what these levels mean and how they can partner with me at home. I’m so excited to see this class take off with reading.
