Help from Elephant and Piggie
27 Mar, 2013. 2 Comments. A Day In First Grade, First Grade, Reading. Posted By: Kristen Smith

I don’t know about your first graders, but mine simply adore Gerald and Piggie.

Who can blame them? They are so fun and lovable and down right hysterical.
I love them as much as they do!
I recently enlisted their help to increase the fluency in our class. It’s not a new idea but it’s one that has worked and really helps us nail down a few of our first grade skills.
First of all, Mo Willems helps us understand that different punctuation marks have us read the sentences differently. My students love reading with enthusiasm and emotion when it comes to E&P.
Second, Mo helps us understand dialogue! The students love picking a friend and a character when they read with a friend.
I have my class partner up and then each group takes one of our E&P books. Then they choose if they want to be Elephant or Piggie. They take turns reading their parts throughout the book. You should see and hear how they get into their parts!
This helps my guys read with accuracy, fluency and with a LOVE of reading.
What teacher can ask for anything more?!
