Farm Fun
13 Apr, 2013. 3 Comments. A Day In First Grade, First Grade, First Grade Science, Uncategorized. Posted By: Kristen Smith
This week we scratched the surface of life on the farm. My students are LOVING this unit. This class is so excited whenever we study anything that has to do with Science. Our five favorite things from last week were:
1. Farmer Style
(A parody of Gangham Style and our most favorite brain break up to date!)
2. Shoo Fly Don’t Bother Me!
This is a center included in my “Fun on the Farm” Unit
My students love, love, LOVE this. (and they are reading and recognizing these new sight words with ease due to this game!!)

3. I spy with my little eye
This is also a center in my “Fun on the Farm” pack. In this, students need to match adjectives to farm animals. My class thinks this is ridiculously fun. I love listening to their ideas and then reading the stories they write using the adjectives!

4. Our New Books!
I placed a giant “Farm order” at Scholastic.com the other day and found all these great books! Our favorite by far has been Three Hens and a Peacock. SO FUNNY!! It is getting passed around book boxes like candy.

Or math bins this week have really focused on making numbers with money and expanded notation, time, and fact fluency. My students were so engaged throughout the entire Math Bin time all week and they were learning and practicing so many of our math skills this week.

We also earned a Pajama Party on Friday! My students all looked so cute in their PJs!!
On Monday we started our Farm KWL and have started to add more and more to it. The students love to read our nonfiction books and add what they are learning to it! I let my class write their facts on sticky notes and add to the KWL as our unit progresses. This really is a great way to hold them accountable to their learning and helps them practice writing down facts!
I’ll add a picture of our sticky note additions in my next blog post!
We also have had a blast writing our opinions about farm animals.
If you are in need of some farm videos for your class, feel free to check out my youtube account and click on the “farm” playlist. If includes everything from brain breaks, to songs, to educational videos about life on the farm and animals.
Enjoy and I hope you have a great weekend!!
