Busy, busy, busy
13 May, 2013. 2 Comments. A Day In First Grade, First Grade, First Grade Science, Language. Posted By: Kristen Smith
Oh my. With the year winding down, I have been on over drive. As you know, the end of the school year is CRAZY but on top of that I have been coaching our Middle School 5th and 6th grade soccer team. I’m so happy to say that we won the district championship this Saturday! The kids played fantastically and I am so incredibly proud of them.
This next week we embark upon our final unit: camping! I love this one. We pull out all the stops and have the kids bring in their tents and spend a day outside learning! They love this and so do I!
We write by flashlight and eat S’mores and have so much fun.
The last two weeks of school we will be using a different format for our literacy centers. I have been noticing that my students need a little but more “rigor” in their literacy centers and therefore tried something the last two weeks. I created “Task card” literacy centers and gave my students different tasks that they each needed to complete before the week was up. They were over the moon excited about this idea and worked so hard to get everything finished.
We used our Ocean theme for our “Test run.” Here is an idea of what we did. I created tasks for my students and printed them out and put them in my mini vertical pocket chat. Each of my students have a number and therefore they just moved their number to the task that they were working on. If they finished their task, they colored in their “task sheet” and then moved on to the next task.
My students used our non fiction readers to complete some of their tasks.
They also wrote reports last week. {I was SO impressed!}
I created 16 Camping themed task cards for us to use for the last two weeks of school. I know my guys will love this and practice so many of the standards in these activities. If you would like to download the Ocean Task cards, you can get them for FREE and then decide if you would like to purchase the camping set. Click here to get taken to the ocean task cards

    I’d sure like to high five those coaches!! “No, your turn” sound appropriate…. 😉

  2. Those task cards look great I’ll have to see how my littles do with the concept. Just a thought, you might want to put your blog title at least on the download. I tend to find a lot of stuff and if there is no connection to the blog on my download it is hard to go back and credit someone or go find more goodies. Thanks again!
