Getting ready for a new year
25 Jul, 2013. 23 Comments. A Day In First Grade, Back to School, First Grade, Free. Posted By: Kristen Smith

I don’t know about you, but my summer seems to be slipping away. My “to-do” list is never ending and I feel like I am just not getting enough done every day.

Luckily, I have been able to get into my classroom every day this last week. I switched classrooms this year so I walked into a new room… not quite knowing where to start.

I found that choosing one area to “finish” really helped me feel accomplished.

I am one of those people who likes to make a list and cross things off once something is accomplished. So, I wrote on my board what I wanted to accomplish each day and happily crossed things off as I finished them.

I decided that I would start with my book corner. Last summer I tackled leveling nearly all my books so I did not have to do that. {thank goodness!!} I decided that I was going to place my corner near a window which would allow natural light to come in and created a little nook under my shelf complete with bean bag chairs and my new chevron couch.

Lyndsey from “A year of many firsts” made such cute Daily 5 posters that I just had to put them up!!  I love the way the “ribbon of Daily 5” looks.
{To make it I cut out a ribbon of black fadeless paper and used the new “skinny border” that my local teacher shop had as a border! It was super easy to put up!}

It was driving me crazy that my labels were “curling” last year so I took out my handy dandy hot glue gun and fixed that problem! They are now very secure and very nicely organized!
I also theme my books. You will notice that I use some of our “favorite characters.” The bottom shelf that has “clear bins” are all my non-fiction books that we will read during the months of August and September. These books change every month.
After my book corner, I tackled my word wall. I wanted this to be very accessible to the students. I attached all of my words to the back of my cubbies with velcro. Students can now take the words to their desk and attach them easily back on the word wall.
After that, I hung up these really cute number posters. I am using Lyndsey’s “cute and cozy” classroom decor set. If you want to buy it, click HERE to get taken to her store!
After that, I went to my back wall and put up a make shift bulletin board. This is a plain wall that I covered with black fadeless paper. I then decided to use two borders and scrap book paper. Right now I have inspirational posters hanging on my clips; however, as the year progresses, this is where I will display my students’ good work.
I covered my clips with Scotch “washi tape.” I was skeptical… and I am now a believer. I LOVE it.
I also started to get my Math Bin area set up; however, it’s not quite finished yet. I did make Math Bin labels though! If you would like to have them, you are welcome to them! Just click on the picture below to download them for free!!
To use them, print the labels on 3 and 1/3 in. x 4 inch labels!
I am so excited because I gave my back to school math bins a face lift! I LOVE the new version. If you already bought them, please re-download them!! You will love the new version and they will look so great in bins with these new math labels!!
{Click on the cover to get them!!}
This new version is completely aligned to the Common Core and gives you tips on how to implement Math Bins!
These are normally $8.00 but for this week only they will be ON SALE!! Get them now! :)
I hope that you are still enjoying your last few days of summer!
