Reindeer Fun! {getting ready for December!}
24 Nov, 2013. 4 Comments. A Day In First Grade, Autumn, December, First Grade, First Grade Holidays, First Grade Science, Holidays, Kindergarten Holidays, Kindergarten Science, Preschool Holidays, Science. Posted By: Kristen Smith
On Friday, my students came to school dressed to the nines ready for our Thanksgiving feast. It was such a blast and such an awesome way to end our unit. We had all of our families come to join us and ate a full-fledge Thanksgiving meal. It was absolutely delicious and such a fun time!
 However, as the day came to a close, and we took down all of our November projects, my students eagerly asked me, “What are we learning about next?!?!”
They were THRILLED to hear the answer was:
REINDEER and CARIBOU!
They squealed with excitement as I took out our new books and began to put up our new bulletin board and centers.
When we get back from Thanksgiving break we will dive head first into learning all about Caribou.
We will read this reader that I wrote:
We will also read multiple picture books that I have been collecting about reindeer and caribou. After learning about them, we will create a few anchor charts, and sort facts and opinions in a center. After my students complete this center, they will write mini-books filled with the facts and the opinions.

At another Literacy Center, my students will unscramble sentences that teach them facts about reindeer.
And they will match some new vocabulary words to their definitions.
 This time each word has a picture that goes with it!
 I even found this CUTE reindeer “bucket” to store the cards in!
 Throughout the week I will be watching for hard workers and they will get to have our new classroom friend sit on their desk! {They love it when stuffed friends watch them work carefully!}
I can’t wait to start this unit… but will definitely enjoy a week off to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends.
If you would like to use any of these centers or activities, they, and many more are included in my new nonfiction science unit, “All About Reindeer.” Click on the cover to get taken to my store where you can see the preview and read what is included in this packet!
