A glimpse into our day!
27 Feb, 2014. 13 Comments. A Day In First Grade, First Grade, First Grade Science, Guided Reading, Kindergarten Science, Science. Posted By: Kristen Smith
I thought it might be fun to show you a glimpse into a ‘normal’ day in our first grade classroom. As many of you know, I teach at a Christian school in Texas. Every morning we start our day in the gym for our morning assembly. The whole school meets together and we start the day with our pledges and prayer. We then head to our classrooms.
Once we get inside, my kids unpack, put their homework on the moon table, and move their clips to green. We then sit on our Jesus rug and take two prayer requests. Each day a different student leads us in prayer.
After we pray, we head to our desks and start our morning work. At this point I take attendance and the lunch count and then start pulling my guided reading groups.
Today, my first group was working on sight words and decoding a reader from my “Guided Reading Pack.” We started with one of their favorite games. In this game my students drive their cars along the sight word road. At first they drive their cards along their roads independently with some teacher support.
After they were confident with all the words, we created a road that spanned the length of our table. They loved driving their cards and reading all the words.
At the end of the road they both exclaimed, “that was so much fun!!”
{the sight word roads can be found HERE}
After their “brain warm up” we dove into our book for the week. We are still working on our sight words for this book so my students today dobbed their words. {This is by far one of their favorite things to do!}
We then hunted for and highlighted the same words in our texts.
They then practiced reading their book!
My next two groups were working through Lyndsey’s new “Close Reading” pack. It is AMAZING. We are love, love, loving it.
After one more group, our morning meeting, transitions, and snack, I taught our phonics lesson for the day. This week we are working on er, ir, and ur words. Today my students were each given a stack of post it notes and had to hunt in our text for words that had our special sounds in them. When they found a word, they wrote it down on a post it and brought it up to the board.
They then had to put their word in the correct area of the board.
While this is not the most glamorous lesson, my students enjoyed it and it was great practice reading, writing, and finding our phonics sound.
After this activity we reviewed the sounds, played a quick phonics game with our new sounds and did our writing workshop lesson for the day. Tomorrow we will partner read this story again and dig deeper into the text and story.
After this we went to specials and lunch and then came back for our math lesson and math bins. I didn’t get to snap too many pictures during this time… but here are two that I quickly took! These students are both working on new centers from my March Math Bin pack. The boy is learning how to round and the girl is working on fact fluency!
After Math, we worked on a Science Investigation. We are learning all about force and motion and my students LOVED the experiment that helped them explore what force was. It’s no surprise that I love science and this was one of those activities that reaffirmed why I do!
This science experiment had my students work together in groups of three. It was such a great opportunity for building each other up and working together.
My students diligently worked together to try to get their rubber bands to make their bouncy balls move.
 They LOVED experimenting with force and loved seeing their balls travel farther and farther in our classroom.
This activity and many more can be found in my “force and motion” science pack.
As you can tell from the pictures, it was a FANTASTIC team building activity and they learned SO much from it.
After the experiment, we wrote about our results.
 Tomorrow we are doing another Science investigation from my new force and motion pack.
My students are SO excited! I hope that you enjoyed the glimpse into my classroom!
