A Day In First Grade's 2017-2018 Kindergarten Classroom Reveal

Hello friends! I hope that you are doing well and that you are enjoying this “back to school season.” I can’t believe it but this year marks the start of my 15th year teaching– what an awesome adventure it has been thus far! We had our “Meet The Teacher” day Friday and our first day of school is Tuesday. As you can imagine, my weekend has been full of prepping, making magic play dough, and getting ready for my incoming kindergarteners. I have been sharing some pictures of my room on my Instagram and thought I’d kick off this school year showing you our classroom!

This year, I wanted to create specific discovery and exploration areas in our classroom to support our inquiries and investigations. I’m happy to say that when my incoming kinders came in during Meet The Teacher, they seemed to really like how the room was set up.

A quiet place to read

The first space in our classroom is our “book corner.” This large space has a gray couch, two white lounge chairs, and a small carpet where students can get lost in a good book. I’ve also stocked my shelves with some of my previous students’ favorite picture books and stories. I also included soft reading pals that my students can read with.

Our Meeting Place

Our meeting place is comprised of a large rug (from At Home), our easel (from Community Playthings), and my teaching chair. (From Amazon: {affiliate} link) In this space, children will gather for stories, whole group and small group instruction, our math meeting, and complete centers.

Our Wonder Table

Next to our meeting area you will find our “wonder table” as well as our light table. Oftentimes throughout the school year I set out provocations that coincide to my students’ interests and our curriculum.  Throughout the year, we will add documentation to the bulletin board collaboratively.

Math Investigation Area

The next space in our classroom is our math investigation area. This is comprised of shelves and our classroom “train table.” (This only houses trains for the first week of school. After that, I use it to set up math investigations.)

(A tip on using train tables in your classroom: This summer my friend and I added “sound proofing” to the table using foam tiles pieces to cover it. In years past I have LOVED using the table but it was oh-so-loud when pieces fell on it. However, now that problem is solved! Simply add these foam floor pieces and not only does it look beautiful but it’s super quiet!!)

Dramatic Play/Language Shelves

Last year, my students LOVED our dramatic play center. Not only did it help my students acquire vocabulary, but it also become a way for my students to act out the concepts that we were working on. This year I decided to put it across from our language shelves to encourage even more writing in this area.

Also in this area is a small sensory table that will function as a hands-on way for my young learners to explore our literacy and numeracy concepts. Throughout the year, a variety of objects will be placed in this small tub to encourage and promote the practice of the standards we are working on. Currently it is holding dyed beans and lacing letters.

Science Center/Area

Our Science center includes a large sensory table (not pictured), a “look closer” table, and an “I wonder window.” This area will hopefully inspire my young learners to think deeply about our science concepts and be a place where they will explore and discover.

I can’t wait to see what this new batch of young learners will want to discover!

Maker Space/Art Area

This year I want to continue to encourage STEM, art, and the creation process in my classroom. I set up a maker space area where my students will be able to paint, draw, create, and build. This art cart holds many art supplies as well as STEM baskets.

Writing Center

I am lucky to know that many of my incoming kinders LOVE to write. Therefore, I created this large writing area just for them. Last year in pre-k they wrote and illustrated many books and I hope this area (the art cart is right behind it) will keep this love of writing alive!

Engineering Area

Finally, the back corner of our room is dedicated to all things engineering. {For all of my type A readers, (I’m one too!!) I promise I have the matching bin for this cart, it’s just on the train table right now!} In this area, I have blocks, roads, ramps, gears, Legos, and more! At the beginning of the year, only some of the sections will be open. As time goes on and my students show me that they can use the materials with respect and responsibility, more items will become available to them!

(See, there’s the bucket!) 😉

I hope that you have enjoyed this brief tour. I can’t wait to dive into exploring with this new batch of students. Again, I hope that you are doing well. Good luck in your back to school endeavors!
